Millionaire on horseback
This is a combination of what are quite possibly my two favorite bacon dishes here in the bay area. Millionaire bacon is a bay area favorite I have seen many places now but the first for me was at Fred’s Place in Sausalito which also happens to have the best french toast on the planet if you are ever in the area. Its thick cut bacon baked with sugar, balsamic vinegar and black pepper. It’s sticky, sweet, savory and decadent.
Devil’s on Horseback are an old British twist on a Victorian dish called Angels on Horseback. Magnolia on Haight street was the first place I tried these and they are spectacular. Dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon roasted and topped with a balsamic drizzle. Goes great with their fantastic beer!
So I was thinking, why not combine the two for an extra mouth watering appetizer that will knock the socks off your guests? That’s what I’ve done here. You’re welcome.
Millionarie on Horseback
Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 18 minutes Servings: 20 bites
10 long pieces of bacon
1/4 cup of goat cheese
20 pitted dates
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
black pepper
toothpicks soaked in a bit of water
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut date halfway through and remove pits if necessary. Cut bacon in half and flatten to stretch. Take about a 1/2 teaspoon of goat cheese and stuff inside the dates. Smush together and wrap in bacon. Secure with toothpick and place seam side down on lined sheet pan. Repeat until full.
Microwave sugar and balsamic mixture for 30 seconds and stir to combine. Brush your little horsies on all sides and sprinkle with cracked black pepper. Bake for 16-18 minutes. Arrange on plate and drizzle with an aged balsamic if you have it. Enjoy!
